I will be visiting Taipei and would like to spend a day learning more about indigenous cultures. Is there a day trip that is recommended or a museum? I read that sometimes there are protests about tourists visiting indigenous areas so I don’t want to do anything that would make someone uncomfortable

You might visit the Shung Ye Museum across from the National Palace Museum. Or take a day trip to Wulai. Wulai is very touristy, but I think there are tours that will take you into the community. You might ask at the Wulai museum. The ethnology museum at National Taiwan University is also good. But best if someone knowledgeable can show you around.
There’s also the Katagalan Culture Center not far from the Xinbeitou MRT station.
