I’m sure this gets repeated periodically, but I recently learned this and I thought it was neat:
Oxford University predates the Aztec Empire. Teaching in Oxford, England, began no later than 1096. Tenochtitlán, the capital of the Aztec Empire, was founded in 1325.

Kyiv Pechersk Lavra is a large and ancient monastery of Eastern Christianity in Kyiv, Ukraine. The monastery had been founded in 1051 and then almost 200 years later, in 1240, it was besieged and looted by the Mongol Empire led by Batu Khan who was grandson of Genghis Khan.
Yeah the Kahns were thoroughly medieval as were the vikings and the huns.
It makes the historian within oneself weep to think of how much was lost in that period.
I think about it all the time. All that culture just burned and squashed. All those codices lost.

They had floating gardens, too. They would plant corn in them, and once the roots of the corn reached the bottom of the lake, the garden wouldn’t even need to be anchored anymore.
