Valve made the Steam Controller CAD & STL files available, pushing again for modding, right-to-fix, and so on!

#deshittification
Pushing for Linux, Proton, open hardware (even if partially), seemingly at the point of obsession…
I suspect they do so after Microsoft released Windows Live, a competitor to Steam that came by default in the system Valve supported.
If someone at Valve had a change of heart, or just want to save their hides after that, either way, a major company pushing for things that result in #deshittification is a win-win situation afaik. =)
(Also breaking the post like this due to bridging it to Bluesky and fediverse microblogging)
I suspect it has something to do with that time Windows bluescreened while Gabe was holding a presentation:

Wasn’t that staged?

Sweet! I’m going to 3d print one and sit in front of my TV making spaceship noises pretending I’m playing a game!
This is good, now if only the controllers were in stock for more than 30 minutes!
Wow.
Excellent news!
Well hello there new community for me to subscribe to!
Very cool
Standalone driver when? I’m waiting, Valve.
Any other console makers doing this? 😂
😬
This is great for me because game controllers have in the past hurt my hands, but I have a 3d printer and can see if the steam controller would do so too. If not then I might even buy one! (or use the STLs and work out some other internals I guess? Is that possible?)
@[email protected] regarding working out the internals, it would be fairly possible, I’d imagine. Even saw some guy on Youtube playing Dark Souls using a toy in a blender-turned controller. And from what I’ve seen about controller mods, even with the board, if you know where to cut and not to, you can be pretty creative with the target shapes and sizes.
Valve has a monopoly Valve has a monopoly Valve has a monopoly Valve has a monopoly /s
😬
But jokes aside, I’d say it’s closer to being part of an oligopoly. And when a player of such market dynamic moves in an “undesirable” way (to the others involved), it lessens maneuver capacity from the others.
