Operation Wildlife (OWL-online)

Kansas looks to have very few rescues that can take care of raptors, let alone ones you can visit. Operation Wildlife is open next month, October 9, 1-4pm, for a rare open house! Don’t miss your chance!
It looks they do public events, and you can also book private events, but that comes at a premium. So be sure to check out the open house if you can!

On February 8th a snowy owl was transferred to our facility from Carrie’s Rehab Critters! 🦉
He had originally been found outside of Dighton by KDWP in western Kansas. Carrie’s Rehab Critters provided medical care to him in the way of gavage feeding and fluids. He responded and began gaining weight! 🙏
Carrie’s Rehab Critters contacted in early February and asked if we would take over the care. A thorough physical exam was performed including weight, labwork & lead testing. We discovered that somewhere on his journey he had been shot. 😭
We removed one lead pellet from his left wing. (This didn’t have anything to do with his grounding). We also ran blood work including a CBC and blood chemistries. He has low heterophils (avian red bloodcells) and a high eosinophil (white blood cell) count plus low level lead toxicity. Our long term plan for him is to manage his care and get him stronger so that he can be transferred to either a rehab in New York, Minnesota or Alaska! 💪
These are Artic birds so releasing him in Kansas is not feasible. We’ve reached out to Project Snowstorm to see if they would be interested in putting a transmitter on him once he is released. We’ve also been in touch with the Minnesota Raptor Center and will coordinate with them for his eventual release. He currently is being given a daily medication that helps prevent aspergillosis which is a fungal infection that snowy owls are susceptible too. Once he is stronger we will anesthetize and xray to check for other conditions including lead shot, lung and air sacintegrity.
