A new tool has been released which allows you to legally rip optical media for a wide range of classic consoles using your PC’s Blu-Ray drive.

OnmiDrive is a firmware modification for MediaTek MT1959-based optical disc drives manufactured by Hitachi-LG Data Storage, allowing the drive to read proprietary game discs for consoles such as the GameCube, Wii, and Xbox 360.

OmniDrive also allows you to rip PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and Wii U discs, but these are all encrypted. It also supports rips of Dreamcast GD-ROMs, but only the low-density area can be read

Having had the misconception before, I must ask: in what jurisdiction?

Places like the USA with the DMCA and Japan with Nintendo, chances are it’s outlawed by default.

It is legal to copy physical media for backup purposes for yourself if you already own a copy in the United States.

It may not be legal to ever use it. But even if that makes this tool effectively useless, It is not illegal.

The DMCA makes it illegal to circumvent encryption even for a lot of purposes that would otherwise be Fair Use. It itself does have some carve-outs, but I don’t know if this is one of them.

I thought that was already possible with a program called Alcohol 120% back in the late 2000s?
