They are the only non-primate mammal known to “babble”. Pups jumble up adult vocalizations, much like human babies practicing their first words.

      Hey, whatever works!

      Males of this species groom themselves and deposit a pungent cocktail of urine and glandular secretions into their wing pouches. When a female approaches, the male hovers and fans the scent directly at her.

      They will also use their wing sacs to “shake” their unique scent toward rival bats to warn off intruders and mark their harem territory.
