Louis Rossman did (IMO) a good rebuttal to the latest panic (and is indicating panic was warranted a decade or so ago.
TL;DW: The real issue is DRM. Even with disks, you didn’t “own” the game. You could be barred from playing it if it required internet connection; you couldn’t burn a copy. GOG distributes diskless games, and with executables that allow you to burn them to a disk if you want. The issue is DRM, not disks for games.
I think its a bit nuanced. But you are correct.
- Not owning physical media means a much smaller or non-existent 2nd hard market. Spawn-wave (another youtube channel) has been talking about this for years now. Its…not good.
- Louis is almost always at the for-front of the conversations about true ownership. You are correct, if you dont own the thing, you end up in situations where things can be taken back without recourse. And physical media, while great, could be just odes to download the actual game/media.
My personal thought on the matter: If you cant run a thing outside of an internet connection (and its tied to another system) then the user doesn’t really own it. Theres a reason my ebook readers dont connect to the internet. And why I have a collection of fat hard drives with stuff the family has collected. And physical media.
If people stopped buying anything Sony the moment they deleted movies people paid for, this wouldn’t be a problem. Companies are realizing people will accept anything they do, even if it’s detrimental to their consumers.
Play as long as you can and don’t buy anything new or even better delete the account right now because eventually they will do it and get of consoles, they have too much control over you as long as you let them.
@mesamunefire If Sony adds a dead man’s switch to your PlayStation, it’s legal copyright protection. If I add a dead man’s switch to Sony’s IT infrastructure, it’s illegal corporate sabotage punishable by everything but death. Sony and Adobe’s dead man’s switches need to be made illegal. No system should ever be required to continuously check in with the manufacturer’s server.
