Hi, I’m an ungraceful walrus who keeps fat fingering the menu at the bottom of my screen and interrupting what I’m reading and would love an option to have it be moved to the top thanks.

Pic is what I see instead of the post I’m trying to read when I fatfinger it.

Try checking the Webview implementation setting in Android’s Developer Options. I had the same problem and it turned out there were two webviews installed and my system was using the extremely outdated one that came with the ROM instead of the modern one from the Play Store.

I’m in the current (I think) Chrome one. Those are the only two options I have. I read it’s a bug with android 9/ Galaxy Note 8’s not giving the proper identification for the web view or something so it thinks it’s wrong.

Your os is severely out of date by nearly 5 years.

Plus 138 was dropped about a year ago.

Your device isn’t supported at all anymore sadly.

Edit: it may be worth exploring if a custom rom is available to bring you up to date.

I have no interest in being up to date with the AI ridden malware current android versions support. My phone works great as is and has S pen support which custom Roms will break. I’m just going to ride this out until its battery dies.

Back when I used Samsung, the custom ROM scene offered stock ROMs with all the crapware removed - usually labeled as “debloated”. If you can find them, those should allow you to update with your S-Pen still working. You can also debloat Android yourself (sort of; without root it just disables packages rather than uninstalling them) using UAB.

You’d lose KNOX though, and a lot of modern apps deliberately break themselves if you’re not running pure stock (or spoofing it, which I can help with if you want to go this route).

I totally respect that take on the matter. I believe its abhorrent that the industry puts people in this scenario in the pursuit of unfettered profit.

I just want to make sure you are aware that by choosing to use a unsupported device you are being exposed to significant threats to your device and your person by extension. With an device that’s been unsupported for as long as yours, it can be trivial for a malicious payload to infect your phone with malware.

Something as simple as visiting a website or even a text message can sometimes be enough to harm you. If you wish to continue using your device it may be wise to purge it of anything sensitive like access to your banking, photos, email, important accounts. I’m not trying to tell you how to use your phone and its very possible you’re well aware of all this already.

There are privacy conscious projects out there with the idea of giving you control over the device you own. I’m not aware if this specific example I’m providing is compatible but it is a demonstration of what’s available. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki//e/_(operating_system) Something like this won’t necessarily solve all your issues (and could cause more like your s-pen comment), but it may help mitigate the low hanging fruit).

Thank you, you’re right. I’m at risk. I only use this device for Lemmy and Reddit while at work. I only use Firefox with ublock. I don’t really install apps anymore. Google Play is a cesspit of adware and malware anyway, even on an updated OS. My main machine is my PC at home.

At some point I will swap over to a pixel with graphene.

@[email protected] is right about Android 9 being horribly insecure. There are a bunch of unpatched CVEs that can allow an attacker full access to your phone, and since even browsers have dropped support for it, you’re going to be lacking protection against modern attack vectors.

If you only use your phone to browse a couple of websites, going into uBlock’s settings and disabling JavaScript will provide extra protection against malware. When you want to allow a site through, just click the uBlock icon and enable JavaScript for the site in the pop-up, then hit the padlock (to save it as a rule instead of being temporary) and refresh.

It’s like NoScript except it doesn’t require another add-on and it’s much easier to use. The downsides are that the control isn’t as fine-grained and it’s slightly less secure (as it’s a binary allow/block for everything on the site, whereas NoScript lets you block individual scripts and third-party domains) - I don’t think it’ll protect you from a trusted site that’s been infected with malware itself. If you’re comfortable with nearly every site being broken without manual intervention, go with NoScript instead for the extra security.

There are also anti-malware filter lists in uBlock’s settings. I can’t recall if they’re enabled by default, but it’s worth checking. They’re a simple change that provide excellent protection on their own.

Are you able to update it from this link? They have an annoying habit of dropping support for older versions of Android so you may be SOL.

Are you running a custom ROM? The webviews you can install on stock ROMs are restricted to specific publishers (usually Google and the phone vendor), but LineageOS adds a few extra accepted certificates for FOSS webviews and some ROMs disable the webview signature verification entirely. You may be able to find a modern version that’s installable on Android 9 with some searching.

Edit: the Bromite project is sadly long-dead, but they have an excellent writeup of how it all works here.

Sadly not, and if I get a custom ROM it breaks my S pen support so I’m just going to keep riding this out until the battery literally dies on this thing then get a pixel with graphene.
