    Since the black king (e1) is in check by the white bishop (h4), I think the previous moves could have been:

    1. … Rg5+ (Rook attacks king on g3)
    2. Kf3+ (King moves to f3, escaping check and opening up a discovered attack on the black King via the h4 bishop)

    Though that series of moves seems silly, given it’s a blunder for black to needlessly sacrifice their rook, and for white to not immediately just take the rook instead of moving the king out of danger (planning to take the rook on the next turn).

    Does a reverse puzzle like this actually have an objective solution? Seems like there could be many possible moves that lead to this position

      However, since f3 is also covered by black’s bishop, it is impossible for white’s king to have been on that square before that ;) The very specific set of constraints make it so that this puzzle should really just have a single objective solution. (Solution is in the spoiler tag in the post body)
