Ok but what does this have to do with darwin? The illustration is from a book written by John Clark Ridpath. Is this an attempt to brand darwin as a racist? Sure he might be a cousin fucker and probably held some views that might be seen as outlandish today but from what I know he was pretty much against slavery and argued for humans to have a common ancestor and not whatever this illustration is supposed to be.

ok so from some more reading. yes he probably was a racist, but my other points still stand and the illustration isnt from him

Yeah, I was confused, because that doesn’t fit to what I know about Darwin.

But after checking the wikipedia entry for Descent of Man, it seems at least partially Darwin did differentiate between higher, more civilised races and less civilised ones.

And the following passage is not exactly showing him in a good light:

Thus the weak members of civilised societies propagate their kind. No one who has attended to the breeding of domestic animals will doubt that this must be highly injurious to the race of man. It is surprising how soon a want of care, or care wrongly directed, leads to the degeneration of a domestic race; but excepting in the case of man himself, hardly any one is so ignorant as to allow his worst animals to breed.

But then again he turns around afterwards and argues we should still be sympathetic and help the weak, because everything else would be evil. So very complex character that can not be summarised in one meme picture or internet comment.

Like I wrote, the illustration is not his, it is a later interpretation and wilful misrepresentation of Darwin’s ideas.

And that disclaimer you wrote, besides being insufficient to explain darwin’s connection to this image, is also buried in the comments.

I learned he wanted to eat almost every exotic animal he found, and even ate a type of turtle to oblivion.

He also corresponded with Karl Marx; where Marx was inspired to analyze capitalism the way that darwin analyzed nature.

      Thank you!

Imagine that black people were considered less human than both native Americans and Asians, and they hated native Americans and Asians. Boggles the mind.

This is one of the justifications of colonisation, and particularly one of the pillars of ‘fatal impact theory’.

The primitive ‘man’ is barely differentiated from an animal, especially when compared to a civilized ‘man’ (white, Christian).

Your title is extremely misleading. You’ve effectively directly attributed the picture to darwin. The “Charles Darwin’s Racial Tier List” is literally your own creation, the image itself has nothing to do with him, and no source I’ve found on the several results i found on tineye for this image mentions darwin. The what the fuck here is not that “some dude supposedly being inspired by darwin drew some racist bullshit in 1871” its darwin being associate with this.

seriously, WTF did you get darwin from?

Please note that this is neither in Darwin’s books nor printed at that time, it is a later interpretation by people who read Darwin and wanted to use it for their own purposes. I wrote 1871 because that is the closest I can come for a text that would be the basis for these racist caricatures.
