Asked the same thing, answer is that Comments are currently set to Hot by default in Jerboa, though the ability to change it is on the way
Give it time. The community was very small for a very long time. There wasn’t a big need or push for detailed mobile functionality.

I’ve been scrolling through a couple communities and get to the end pretty quick. Then realize over half the posts are the last two days.

I don’t think there is a way to sort comments yet. It doesn’t seem to matter what I do comments are always random for me.
hmm. sort options do seem to exist in other places.
You can “globally” change your comment sort. From your main feed (not in comments):
Hamburger Menu > Settings > username settings > Default Sort Type
That’s the sort option for the feed and not the comments.
