Did Edward Robinson ever play a sympathetic character?
he played a good guy in The Stranger and managed to make Orson Welles (who plays a fugitive Nazi war criminal) look sympathetic in comparison. it’s by design but nevertheless

the funniest thing is that the role was originally planned for Agnes Moorehead and then someone at the studio figured “wait, our protag is downright demonic why not just hire Ed Robinson for shits and giggles?” and the rest is history. Worst Orson Welles still head and shoulders above a good half of noir genre.
