Looks like AI will take personal computing from us.
My guess is that is the goal.
I am not too knowledgable about what type of processing data centers actually do. If they can be used for cloud computing, they can be rented out as more cloud storage/faster compute to people with weaker builds when the AI bubble pops. Like Stadia style.
Oh fuck. We are actually downloading more ram…
Won’t really work in Germany, our internet is shit
I always thought that would be kinda cool in a self hosted home. Like powerful system in a closet or basement and several terminals in various rooms with low power. Imagine being in your living room playing I don’t know elden ring then oh it’s time to cook dinner move to kitchen start dinner and then keep playing as you keep an eye on it.
Chin up, mate. Hold out just a little longer.
Already been waiting 5 years.
Ridiculous… And for what? AI slop that nobody wants?
This whole thing is possibly history’s biggest waste of resources. None of this makes any damn sense.
Is it even a very atypical bubble? Or is this expected for completely unregulated capitalism? We don’t get any interest rates on savings any more, so I believe since 2008 the stock exchange heated up. Money is being printed. I’ve read that people believe the stock index will never never go down again because if it ever does, everything collapses.
This is just a bubble that happens to affect RAM. It’s not really AI’s fault lol. It’s just that the entire enshittification strategy came with AI even before it launched. We have advances so much as a civilization that we can pre-enshittify new technologies when they start now lol.
It definitely doesn’t make any sense and we can only hope the data center boom bursts before the insane energy requirements completely cook the planet.
On the bright side, I believe this is fueling breakthroughs in compute hardware and software. So after the AI bubble pops, we might be able to run large models cheaply at home with solar power, once those hardware breakthroughs move into production. There is also competitive 1-bit ternary version of LLM that can run locally on a smartphone. The AI hardware embargo on China definitely fueled their investments so we will see vastly more production capabilities and lower prices.
