So I’ve heard that Meditations by Marcus Aurelius is one of the more misunderstood and misused books out there. I work with young men and boys and would like to know what actually is in this book since it’s often quoted in the manosphere. However, it’s quite hard to read and understand.
I had fewer problems when reading The myth of Sisyphus. I think this is partly because it’s more contemporary but also because it’s easier to find what philosophers think about the book. When googling Marcus Aurelius I get a lot of the popular quote mining that doesn’t help me understand more about what he is writing about.
So, does anyone here have any suggestions on resources that could help me when reading this book? If you could recommend some reading companion book or similar that would be awesome!
Probably check out all of the resources from Ryan Holiday at the Daily Stoic, his career is explaining the book (as a drastic oversimplification) and talks a lot specifically about the manosphere and it’s misuse of stoicism as well. Meditations is also originally written as a diary or journal and not really as a story so keeping that in mind while going through it as well.
