So in the long-term, will this drive country folk back into the cities?
Cities can burn, too. Altadena was adjacent to hillsides, but once houses caught it ripped through thousands of homes.
were those brick/stone houses or wood?
Just asking because of that fire in Norway the other day: lots of wooden houses wiped out, the brick ones seemed unharmed.
I couldn’t tell you what each of the over 9k destroyed buildings was made of, but I can tell you that even if the bricks were standing afterwards, the inside would still burn. The heat of the building beside it burning plus embers on the roof (does everyone have a tin or tile roof where you live?) are enough to send it up in the right conditions. This church even had a tile roof and it didn’t save it:

Yup. I live in the northeast US where a lot of old buildings are brick. Only the exterior is brick, the interior beams and floors and everything are all wood. It’s not uncommon to see a brick building that burned years ago, completely empty inside with just the brick exterior still standing.
Houses in the US are virtually always wood frame. Brick houses are especially uncommon in CA.
What do you mean back into the cities? France at least had a very rural and agrarian population until the 19th century, when the industrial revolution led poor farmers to the cities to work in factories. As far as I know there never was an backwards movement from the cities to the countryside since then
There are plenty small villages and towns left. Then also the lone houses in the countryside - lots of bnb’s by foreigners among these. And then indeed the farms which still exist. This is all anecdotal experience of a few trips through the country, I might be wrong :)
