Just waiting for some extremist to announce something in retaliation like ‘truefreedom rideshare’ where ‘strong conservative men’ can book a ride specifically with vulnerable women under some other buzzword naming.

I look forward to reading the their company policy on different genders sharing cars vs sharing bathrooms.

Judging by the comments on this post, many many men seem to be very upset about it.

Also wild comments saying things like “Oh, why not make a rideshare that forbids black people??”

Making things safer for women = discrimination against men?

Lots of men are making this about themselves. It’s awful to see.

Yes, this feature is literally discriminating against men. Don’t deny the evident. However, does this mean that it’s bad? Not necessarily. Sometimes to make things safer for women you need to discriminate on the basis of sex.

I assumed it was for the sake of the passengers (and customers choosing their preference isn’t that big of a deal), but if it’s about the employees of the company not being safe, then the company’s not doing enough. For one, male drivers shouldn’t be left on their own to deal with assaulters.

This sounds like a PR move rather than dealing with the problems.

Anyone got a non-paywalled archive link?

Sorry, no archive link. Best I can do is a copy & paste.

Lyft said on Tuesday that it was introducing a feature that would help match female drivers with female passengers on its ride-hailing app, in an effort to improve safety and encourage more women to drive with the company.

The feature, Women+ Connect, will allow women and nonbinary riders and drivers to make being connecting with each other for trips a priority by toggling on a setting in the app. They could still be matched with men when no women or nonbinary people were available nearby.

Seeing as over 33% of women have been sexually assaulted by men, the only sexism here is that you’re complaining about women wanting to feel safe.

Just because some group is more in need of some feature, why limit this feature to just them?

Lyft made a system of saving someone’s gender and searching by gender. And then instead of a toggle called “search drivers based on my gender”, created “search only for woman drivers”. This is the pure sexism, not people complaining about including everyone.
