I have a 7 with LMDE and the Surface Kernel, something as shit itself and I’m not sure what, I cant even boot into an LMDE thumbdrive
Did you leave secure boot turned on?
I have a 7 with Cachy KDE on it. It’s my usual go-to for “I need a screen”.
Camping? Instant movie. Bored? Instant comics/manga. Surface tablets rock Linux.
Did you get the touch screen work flawlessly? I tried Zorin with my SP7, but even with the surface linux kernel properly installed, the touch input was greatly reduced, pen too laggy to draw accurately enough, and you could not turn the hand touch input off, for when the pen is near.
linux-surface works well enough for me to turn comics pages and giggle like a kid using OpenComic, but I haven’t extensively tested Krita, no, not much of an artist.
Thanks for the answer. I have been searching, has anyone gotten it to work well enough as an artist, but so far I have had no luck… the SP-Linux userbase does not seem to overlap that much, with digital artists. Personally I use my SP7 a lot for drawing, so I am still stuck on Windows 10.
I have messed with it as a notebook, and yeah there’s no palm protection, I did have some luck plopping a thin notebook under my palm to keep it from triggering it while writing but the novelty worn off.

Yeah because it’s glued in and it will break the screen when you open it. I’m sure the price isn’t insane since they have to do all that

How well do KDE and QT apps perform on a touchscreen? I am also a surface linux user and I’ve been meaning to switch to KDE from Gnome. It actually works great but I missed being able to use themes
KDE’s touchscreen support is great. I didn’t ha e a surface but used it for a couple years on a similar 2-in-1 with a pen during university.
They work fin but KDE gobbles up ram. You have to turn off indexing to get best results.

I’m on the bad end of the Dunning Kruger curve on Linuxy things (I am decent at making my Pis and simple servers and Deck behave, but I still daily drive Windows). This looks like a nice setup for something with a touch screen. What UI is this? Is this “stock” Ultramarine?
It’s ultramarine gnome with a handful of extensions. I mostly use it for touch interface. Ultramarine has a version built of the surface-kernel so it’s easy peasy to get going.
why Gnome over the Plasma release?
Also, plasma just GOBBLES up my ram. I have to disable a couple things to make it work reliably.
Gnome is more touch friendly. My use case is more tablet than desktop. I’ll install plasma later and use it as a desktop when I need it at some point.
Do you think this setup would work as a tablet replacement in terms of weight, battery life (under Linux) and UI? It seems like it could and would help me escape Android, but I worry it’ll have some obvious in hindsight issue.
That’s kind of what I’m doing. I’m trying to find apps s for a couple things but mostly it’s great.
