I’ve got the 7in boox with the color screen and it’s awesome. Mostly, I’m posting to see if this community will go anywhere.
I got the B&W Boox 7 a few months ago after my old Kindle finally gave up the ghost. Although it’s a fully-fledged Android tablet I only use it as an eReader, so color isn’t necessary.
Getting a Shelfmark + Calibre + KOReader workflow set up has been a game changer for me.
I’ve been looking at the 10inch boox color… but the ~600USD price tag and the supposed lack of durability worry me.
I currently use a
OUKITEL RT7 TITAN 5Gandroid tablet as my ereader, the ~1kg weight is a lot… but the battery life is stupendous, at ~280 hours between charges; with daily ~5 hour reading sessions~(this is due to local electricity company ordnances saying not to use power for a period of the day lest you get charged roughly 80¢ per KWhr, as opposed to the usual rate of roughly 02¢ per KWhr. yes its stupid, no I can’t move, and yes I’m semi-glad to have an excuse to read a lot :D)~
I got mine second hand for a little over half that price shipped.
$600 is an outrageous price for an ebook reader for sure. I just read fiction novels on mine. No need for color, so I just stick to regular grayscale e-ink displays. I don’t think I have any ebook readers that are worth more than $200. Most of mine were bought in the $50 to $80 range. My main go-to’s are a Pocketbook w KOreader installed, and a Gen3 Kindle.
Tho I have a little refurbished Nook Glowlight that I love to use when I take trips that involve flying.
for sure. it -is- apparently a full fledged android tablet though, so its not so much an “ereader” as it is a “android tablet with a niche screen technology”… its being budgeted for; hopefully the durability lives up to the price tag; I’d hate for it to break.
I’d also recommend it for its writing feel, it feels way better than any other tablet to write on. I actually prefer it to paper at this point. I haven’t personally observed durability issues, but then I haven’t dropped it. It stands up to daily wear and tear well, but yeah if I dropped from too high or on the wrong angle I suspect the screen would crack in a way eg my phone wouldn’t in comparable circumstances.
I’ve got the Kobo Clara Colour and it’s fantastic. Great battery life, convenient form factor, color e-ink display, and super easy to use with Calibre to load/manage my eBook collection.
a 6" display is a bit too small for my liking… it’d have to be at least 7.5, but preferably closer to 10 inches diagonal for me to consider it. :(
Kobo has offerings at those sizes (Libra and Elipsa), but honestly the screen size hasn’t been much of an issue. You can resize the text to whatever font size you want, so the only real difference is having to tap the screen to flip pages a little more frequently (imo). I prefer the 6" Clara because it is a lot more pocket-portable
If I didn’t have access to a library the first thing I would purchase is one of those ebooks. If you are in the middle of nowhere you can load up a library’s worth of books and be well stocked up.
I’m considering a color one for reading my webcomics and whatnot, but I’m not really sure if things are actually in a place where that would be a good user experience, reading from an indie website or webtoon/tapas
I was just looking at the Boox Palma 2, but it’s a little outside my price range. How long have you had it? Which version do you have?
Since Christmas, so I think it’s the color 2. I think I would have been just as happy with the black and white version, and sometimes I wish I had gone bigger because reading at night I want to keep the brightness super low and I can’t see small fonts with that little light. It’s slow but that’s okay for me. Battery is just fine for me, I charge on Monday and Friday
