Re-watched this recently, much better than I remember.

The key is to understand how utterly tongue-in-cheek the Roger Moore Bond movies are.

I’m only surprised he doesn’t look at the camera and wink sometimes.

George Lazenby making a joke at the camera immediately put me off him. I think they learned their lesson. I don’t know if there’s been polling but I’d put my money on Lazenby being the least loved Bond.

It was Lazenby who turned down further Bond movies. The producers wanted him back.

        Yea, that’s a bit too on-the-nose.

Also, OHMSS is Bond’s back story for why he doesn’t get involved with women.

He got married and his enemies targeted (and murdered) his wife. He decided he’d never let that happen again.

So Lazenby gets the heat of a dark story too.

60’s audiences weren’t interested in something like that - they wanted a fun, over-the-top hero like Bond - they had enough seriousness from Post-WWII and now the Cold War from which Bond was a fun escape.

This is a dry political drama involving the politics of intelligence agencies and the people put at risk to serve wider ideals lost to the winds of circumstance and fate… Surely.

looks more plausible with each passing day. still kinda sad we will never get proper adaptation of the novel - book Drax is a fascinating character
