Strangely the article doesn’t talk at all about how the place began, except to say the neighborhood was built around 1790, while George Washington was in office. San Juan Capistrano was started in 1776 by Spanish priests and locals, led by a missionary named Junipero Serra, who started 8 other missions up and down the California coast.
