The devs of the horror game ILL dropped their third dev diary, and it’s all about sound 🎧
Game director Maxim Verkhin and composer Alon Mor explain why the soundtrack deliberately avoids cheap jump scares and genre clichés. Instead: oppressive silence, distorted organic textures, and inspiration from 20th-century academic avant-garde (Ligeti, Stockhausen, Schaeffer).
Tracks feature modified field recordings: slowed bird chirps become eerie choral moans, whip cracks build rhythmic patterns, and mechanical clanks form ambient textures. The new track Whalesong tells the tragic story of a giant unknown creature through sound.
