It’s certainly beautiful.
Doubled the Campari as it seemed like cheating to use 1/2 ounce, and reduced the simple syrup because it didn’t need that much - I stuck my finger in the mix before sweetening and debated using any but I think a little was right.
2 oz tequila
1oz Campari
Generous 1/2 oz each of grapefruit juice and lime juice
Spoonful of simple
Shaken with ice, strained directly into coupe.
My impressions - the first sip shockingly bitter but by third sip tastes good. Definitely Campari forward, the tequila is lost even though there is a lot in here. But it is balanced and I do like it.
What it makes me want to try is Campari, limoncello, and grapefruit with vodka and lemon.
Campari is the most vile cocktail ingredient I’ve ever tasted. It’s just concentrated bitterness that drowns out every other flavor.
Yes. I find it challenging, bile bitter and unalloyed sweet, too strong, and do hate a Negroni, which just amplifies those bitter and sweet flavors.
But cocktails are like perfume in a way, something awful smelling, when mixed with other things, can make the perfume smell better than it does without it, and this did end up a pleasant drink with the sour from the citrus & a very smooth tequila Blanco. It wouldn’t have been better without the Campari.
