They also say that you get more conservative as you age. But the older I get, the further and further I’ve drifted to the left.

Growing up is realising that evil is mundane and boring.

It’s still important to understand the motives behind evil actions, even if they are selfish, misguided, or outright hateful.

The rough part is that both parts of that are true. The world is complicated and there are difficult decisions that sometimes have to be made, ideally, by carefully threading the needle between two legitimate concerns. But also, politicians generally don’t give a shit.

The existence of the right drags down everyone else’s politics by creating all these bullshit problems where one side is just obviously wrong. It’s like, if you’re discussing how to do heart surgery and you’re preoccupied with trying to dispel the notion that a jackhammer is the appropriate tool for it, then it’s going to be difficult to discuss any kind of technical intricacies that are actually important to doing the surgery correctly.

That’s exactly why it’s more productive to have conversations in spaces where the right is just completely excluded from the conversation. Even then, people will still go, “You’re only advocating for using that technique because you’re secretly a jackhammerist!” and whatnot.

“But we have plenty of food, it’s just not always in the same place as where the hungry people are. Can’t we solve that?”

“No, you see it’s a problem of logistics. There’s no realistic way to get the food to where those people are.”

“We’ve put people on the fucking moon before…”

It’s literally the bell curve meme, if you understand things well enough you can actually work through the mild complexity instead of just being able to see it and giving up.

I started viewing evil in a very utilitarian, consequential fashion a long time ago. Your motive doesn’t matter at the end of the day, what matters is the ratio of harm to good your actions do.
