Fall is here and with it comes the return of the king of knits! Versatile, adjustable, warm, repairable, and with that collar really taking it over the edge. Post about your favorite shawl collar cardigans and all the years of love you have put into them or just share in my confusion about why other collar types exist for cardigans

Just in case you haven’t seen Cowichan sweaters before, the real ones are peak shawl cardigan. Here’s a handmade one I saw in a small museum in the gulf islands

I'm lucky enough to have one myself! I got it on ebay last summer for a song and I love it to bits! The volume and softness are unmatched. It doesn’t do a good job keeping me warm against the wind on its own but I have a big old leather jacket that fits on top of it and together those two keep me warm on even the coldest days of the year no matter how long I’m outside. Shawl collar cardigans are the king of knits and cowichans are the king of kings.

Sadly, I don’t own a shawl collar cardigan. In fact I had to look up what a shawl collar is. Looks classy!

Fortunately they are easy to come by for cheap used. Check your local thrift stores for good deals or online if you want something particular. Wool, cotton, nylon, and ramie are all good materials to see on the tag and don’t be afraid to rehab one with a few small holes in it, fixing the holes with darning is easy and they look better when they have been well loved.

Edit: here are some pics of a cardigan (not shawl collar but I love it anyway) that had a few holes mostly around the back of the neck that I fixed up with some multi-colored darning in gray and orange so it is easy to see. None of my other sweater repairs are this visible.
