The Nippon TV (NTV) television broadcasting company announced on Thursday that it has decided to acquire 42.3% of the shares of world-famous animation studio Ghibli. This transaction, once completed, would make NTV the largest shareholder of the Ghibli, and turn the studio into a subsidiary of Nippon TV.

He means that the acquisition will just result in Nippon TV crassly exploiting their new property as hard as they can, rushing out tons of cheaply-made garbage in hopes of swindling consumers with Studio Ghibli’s good name. Eventually, Studio Ghibli will be a name that people associate with cheap shit, and will be forgotten.

That is very possible and has happened in the past with many companies that have been acquired by bigger ones. However, the article states NTV has acquired a 42.3% share in the company. If over 50% of the remaining shares are still within the studio, they will still have control. It remains to be seen.

What I primarily didn’t understand about the original comment was the “loved” part of it. People obviously do not like a studio going down the drain because of an acquisition so I don’t get what the author meant to convey by sarcastically using “loved”.

The loved part was sarcasm, and the quotes were to emphasize that it’s something said by someone else at some point and not the belief of the person commenting.
