In my image is the app settings for Jerboa, and I can see that it will open links from those instances automatically (and it seems to work fine) - however, I’m on Lemmy.world, and it’s not one of them, so links there (or to other instances) open in a browser.

The “Add link” option is greyed out there. Is there anything I can do within Jerboa to enable more instances to play nice? Or is it something that the instances themselves would need to implement in some way?

Thanks!

I’m currently working on making it so that fediverse links opened in Jerboa will open in Jerboa. After that I think we could see about how to support that “add more links” setting in the UI.

That would be wonderful! I don’t really understand how to add new instances to Jerboa right now.

Right now to add an instance you have to log into an account @thatInstance.

That’s too bad. I thought the point was that we could have one account and be able to visit other instances. Hopefully there will be another way to add instances through search or links.

You have to look for it as !“community”@“instance” it works pretty well on desktop, not sure if it’s as good in Jerboa. No need to create accounts in other instances. If people from your instance have already interacted with such communities you’ll be able to look it up using just some characters in the name. Hope this helps. Try using your instance website if Jerboa doesn’t work.

You can visit communities in other instances by searching [email protected] but, to my knowledge you can’t get the “local” experience of other servers yet.

That’d be fantastic. Thanks very much for all your work, it’s really made joining Lemmy a much better experience!

Presumably Android supports the ability for a user to add their own links to be opened by apps (otherwise why would that button be there), but I’ve never actually seen an app support it. It most likely is a programmatic change that must be implemented in the app’s source code or declared in the app’s manifest.

Devs are currently working on a solution to handle this better. Mastodon already does it correctly.

How does mastodon handle it? I don’t use it very much, but the one time I clicked on a link it took me to the browser and I couldnt find a way to open in the app

Yeah, sorry, I should have been clearer that it’s in App Info, not Jerboa’s settings.

I just found it as well, it’s in your phone (e.g., Google) settings. For my phone (Samsung) I go:

(Samsung) Settings -> Apps -> Jerboa for Lemmy -> Set as Default -> Supported Web Addresses

That leads to the page shown in the OP screenshot 😊

Thanks. Did that, but still not showing up and still can’t scroll down in settings/look and feel. Reinstalled the app too, so I don’t know 🤷

I don’t see it either. Just updated to the latest version and I can’t scroll through all of the options in Look and Feel. You can barely see an option check box at the bottom, but I can’t scroll the screen down to see it, so maybe it’s there, I just can’t get to it?

you’re in the settings within Jerboa.

you need to open Androids App Info of Jerboa, an Android Settings Menu about the installed App Jerboa, not a setting within Jerboa.

Yeah, I did this too. I was just showing that I can’t scroll down in the settings section of Jerboa. Maybe should have started a new thread for that. Here’s my phone settings

Yeah, but it only features 8 or so instances and there’s no way currently to add any more (nor to replace any of those that are there). It’ll get worked out, though, I’m sure.

Lemmy.one is also not supported, nor the other 100’s of instances. Is there a workaround, maybe through the browser app?

If it’s an app manifest issue, can it be coded to allow modification of the list?
