If you are going this year, grab the Royal Show app, it’s actually handy - particular things like an interactive map from your position to the nearest toilets. Or guiding you to specific locations and pavilions.

Grab the Crowd Canvas app as well, if you are staying for the fireworks. They’ll recommend over and over if you are there, but with thousands of people hammering the tower(s), downloading an app is hard. It’s neat - the app takes over your phone flashlight and the crowd has synchronised flashes as a part of the event.

If going with kids, take a photo of each kid when you arrive. With the clothes they are wearing. If you lose a kid, you can give the police/organisers a photo of the kid as they are today. It’ll make a huge difference. Also, teach your kids your phone number. That’s not just limited to the show, though.

Check the events of the day. If you want to see woodchoppers, make sure you know when that is happening. If you want to see the duck races or dog jumping (and you really do) check when those events are happening. Again, the Interactive map on the Royal Show app is your friend.

The fireworks show is great. I thought it was better than the last Skyshow. The fireworks are just in front of you.

Hey, good tips here. I did not know there were duck races! Crowd canvas sounds cool, and great safety advice.

Just general advice: make sure you pack a power bank and a charger as well as a little bit of cash. The amount of people I’ve seen go to the show and have to do the walk of shame seeing if anyone has a spare charger is astounding. And yes, it is 2023, just about everywhere will take card, but you never know when an extra $20 in cash might come in handy. Last time I went to the Melbourne show, I got a kebab from one of those little food trucks across the road. They normally take card but that might their eftpos machine was down. Not life or death, obviously, but you don’t want one places banking error somewhere along the line to ruin the good vibes!

Good call, charger and cash could certainly save the day.

I haven’t checked this year, but in previous years IGA sold discounted entry tickets.

Edit: I asked today, IGA aren’t doing it this year. Apparently, $65 for an adult and two kids (same price for a family of four) is a discount.

I saw that the state gov subsidised ticket prices this year to increase accessibility.

I know the simple tips like take own sangas, the animals and woodchopping is free and presale tickets may be cheaper.

Also, that the coin-pusher machines can be a teens’ first experience of gambling losses.
