Just a random thought flashed through my mind that once Cliff and David were done with the space mission, back on the earth how hard it would have been for Cliff to prove David guilty?

“Beyond reasonable doubt”? Almost impossible, I think.
Assuming you were able to find the painting in the barn, and his drawings in his quarters, you would be able raise reasonable suspicion enough to ensure Cliff couldn’t be convicted for anything, but not enough for David to be convicted. They would both just have to live the rest of their lives dealing with their individual losses. Pretty much the intention, I suppose.
I would assume there would 24/7 recording to a remote location, so I’d say “easily”.
