Samsung’s rival 5K to the Studio Display is finally nearing a public release, with a date of July 3rd for South Korea. A few leaks have teased the ViewFinity S9 in Switzerland and Australia so hopefully a worldwide release will quickly follow.

This seems like a very good alternative to the Studio Display, least of all because how much Apple screwed up with the Studio Display.

What are the issues with the Studio Display?

For me the main problem with the Studio Display is the lack of connectivity. I have a MacBook Pro and a Linux desktop PC, I want to use them both with the same monitor. The Studio Display only has 1 video input, so I would have to keep swapping cables or set up some clumsy external video switching.

Combine that with the lack of mounting flexibility, and other odd design choices like the semi-fixed proprietary power cord, the Studio Display hasn’t seemed that compelling to me. For the premium price it seems to have a lot of limitations.

I’ve seen others complain mostly about price, issues with the webcam, or it not using a newer display technology. Personally I just want to see more options and competition in the 5K space, and other HiDPI resolutions generally.

I have seen recommendations for the LG 27MD5KL as a 5K monitor with thunderbolt input.
