I’m in terrible shape and I can do 2 minutes before I die now. Just do it once a day and you’ll get better over time. Who knows? Maybe one day your core strength will even rival a dachshund.

But why can humans only do this for such a short time? Is it because we only walk upright? What is the scientific explanation?

Pretty much yeah, our bodies just aren’t meant to support half of our weight on our arms for an extended period of time.

The plank position also puts a lot more weight onto your arms compared to being on your hands and knees or something like that. With the way the dog is standing, their weight is distributed evenly.

True, but a much more practical reason is that most people simply don’t care about their core muscles and core stability and a proper planking position hits the core pretty hard.

Also a good point, your core matters a lot in that position too.

Overall it’s pretty much an “our bodies aren’t made to do that” situation all around.
