In the first phase, it’s is just the two guys next to him. Second phase is the pope using his biblical magic. In the third and final phase, he merges with Jesus behind him, starts flying to avoid your attacks, and sends out legions of angels between turns.

My experience with video games tells me that striking a mortal blow to the Pope wouldn’t kill him but only reveal his true form.
Probably release some either some Duke of Hell just wearing human skin or a C’tan pretending to be a human, since that is what that giant sculpture is behind him anyway.
