A portion of the former Fresh Kills landfill in Staten Island has been turned into parkland and the soil will be replenished by composted human feces flushed from a solar-powered restroom.
Mayor Eric Adams heralded the dung-filled development during a groundbreaking ceremony at the former home of the world’s largest garbage dump on Sunday.
As a transplant to the island, I’m excited for this project. I wish I had a bike (and time to ride) to check out the paths.
Biosolids (human manure) is used a lot in land reclamation
So this isn’t as revolutionary as I initially thought then?
No, but it’s still really cool to see it used at this scale
So about the same as the rest of Staten Island then.
If this comes as a surprise to people I have bad news about septic systems.
Its interesting because its composted but yeah poop doesn’t vanish, it biodegrades and composting accelerates the process. Composting toilets have been a thing for a while.
Is there they’ll make Trump do his community service?
