That to me was an important feature of reddit :(

What I suspect is that they were getting flooded by bots…

You guessed it. Captcha and Email verification was enabled to stop the influx of bots.

Has the ability to create communities also been limited? I’ve been trying and the circle keeps spinning.

No, none of those limits are set. But did you check if the community already exists? Lemmy doesn’t always give nice error messages…

      Did it work?

Yes it stopped the scripted signups. Are we out of the woods? Never

I hate how everyone wants email these days. I bloody hate email in principle. If websites at least had options for Discord or Matrix or Session verification.

I get it. And I hope that more options but email will become available. But it is what it is for now. And without any sort of verification it would be hard to stop the creation of users/communities by bots and be overrun by spammers. This would quickly turn sour.

I didn’t mean it as a complaint against you specifically, just a sigh about the state of web site accounts in general.

Oh I seriously didn’t mean to sound snappy. I would like it too that I didn’t need to link my email address with every service I want to use.

Why not use a throw-away email address?

      • @WhoRoger

That’s extra work, throwaway services are often blocked, and it also defeats the purpose of having a backup contact in case of loss passwords etc.

But as I said, I hate email in general and wish there were at least other options to “verify my humanity” or for those other purposes email is used.

Never had any issues whatsoever, it is less work to me than logging into my mail account and confirming my account, but I also like to have a separate account for every service and never use the “login with facebook/whatever else” option.

it also defeats the purpose of having a backup contact in case of loss passwords etc.

That’s true, but if you actually want to be able to recover your password, there isn’t a way around providing your email.

That’s why I’m saying it would be nice if web services provided alternatives.

I was once around a web site that was moving from open to an account system. I suggested to the owner to offer Discord verification in addition to email, and they actually did, within like a couple hours. It’s not impossible.

Don’t you need email for matrix? You certainly need it for discord.

Not sure how it’s now, but even discord didn’t need email unless a server required verification.

Depends on the instance. Discord is starting to mandate the phone number in addition to email.

I already have 2 domain names each with infinite email assesses, 2 Tutanota mails and 1 Proton… Not counting any work accounts… I’m not hurting for email. I want LESS :P

Isn’t Discord just a chat site? How would you use it for verification?

I’ve never even heard of Matrix or Session verification. Email sounds like a much easier solution IMO.

Discord has bots, so you can send verification links or just confirm the user exists. It’s been done.

Sounds like email verification with an extra step of logging into Discord. I might be way off the mark, though.

Depends which one you use more or find more comfortable.
