Hey there! It’s your favorite (and only) /c/internetfuneral moderator here. I just wanted to share my current thoughts about this community as a whole and get some steam off while I’m at it. All my comments can be summarized in this comment I’ve made in a deleted posts:

Honestly, its been kinda tough deciding what’s considered “internet funeral” material or not. I always try to be a bit more lenient on posts, yet I still feel like the community just “isn’t there yet”. Unlike other community with basic and easily understandable rules, /c/internetfuneral is such a different community that you have to view it from a different angle. Its hard to moderate posts since

  1. I’m not always online

and 2. Art is subjective. What classifies as “internet funeral” material to you might not be accurate to what I think it is.

I just like to judge posts whether or not it fits the vibe of this community. Is it a good way of moderating posts? I honestly don’t know, but it seems to be mostly working for me.

From moderating this community for a few months, I’ve came to realize that it isn’t just “surreal posts with text”, but more of “[email protected] but with text” community. Because of this, I try to moderate posts under that specific context, but I understand that not everyone thinks of it that way.

Sorry if I was a bit ranty there, I just woke up.

Anyways, I would like to announce that I will be adding new moderators to this community! (Very exciting) More specifically, I’m looking for people in the European timezone to help moderate and curate posts (but I do welcome people in other time zones as well). I feel like I alone can’t accurately curate posts alone. It would be better to have some second opinions to help too. Since this is such a niche community, it would help if you already knew about the original subreddit, or are an active community member (reporting posts, commenting, etc). If you’re interested, comment on this post and I’ll announce the winners tomorrow.

Thank you and have a good day.

Also thank you to everyone (especially @[email protected]) for actually reporting posts. <3

I think the biggest thing that draws me to this community is surrealism. If it’s not surreal and it’s just a meme, it probably shouldn’t be allowed.

Of course I enjoy the occasional meme, but Ive seen a few in here that feel like they just missed the mark of being surreal.

But that’s just my two cents. I still love this community regardless.

I live in Europe spatially and temporally, and sitting at my 1998 Gateway pc in this abandoned gas station deciding whether things are internet funereal enough is just about the most internet funereal thing I can think of.

Maybe it’s coincidence but I left a comment earlier on a now-delered post criticizing subreddits and lemmy communities in general. If that’s the post you’re referring to, please know I wasn’t referring to this sub in particular. You’ve been pretty good at sticking to the theme and when I’ve felt a post doesn’t belong, I’ve reported it and seen some removed.

I think when it comes to themed communities like this, it’s better to have stricter rules so (if you even agree), defining what does and doesn’t count would be helpful.

My personal opinion is that the criteria should be:

    1. Images only. No links or videos. No screenshots. No memes.

    2. Images must be about the end of an era or a collapse of some sort, preferably relating to technology

    3. Surreal but not “weird for the sake of being weird”

    Like you said…it’s gotta vibe.

As an example of what I consider an extremely fitting post, I think this one, posted by you, nails it

I know you weren’t referring to me, but your comment just encouraged me to make this post. I do agree that I should be a bit more strict when curating. Maybe I should update the side bar and the other pinned post, but not a lot of posts comes to where I have to worry that much.

Btw are you interested in becoming a mod?

Great, I’m glad you didn’t take it that way! If you kept this community going exactly as you have been, I’d be perfectly happy with it. It’s a good theme with a steady stream of posts and most are pretty good.

I’ll unfortunately have to decline your offer…Based in past experiences with modding both large and small subs, I know I’ll fall behind on the modqueue and get needlessly stressed about it before logging out of my account forever in shame :(

I randomly came across this community maybe two weeks ago. I still have no idea what this community is about, but I know I love the content. Thanks for putting effort into moderating thingies, have a cookie! 🍪

I enjoy this community a lot. I think it’s done a good job of keeping things strange without it descending into the shitshow that r/surrealmemes with the same tired ideas recycled over and over.

I think you’re doing a good job. So what is you remove something that someone else thinks fits or something else gets through. It’s all meaningless anyways.

I mean if you have trouble finding someone, I’d be ready to do the job. I live in Germany, so European timezone, but the thing is; I’m pretty new to Lemmy, don’t know the original subreddit and never posted here, due to a lack of selfmade content. I do enjoy the community a lot, though

I just found this community the other day, and it honestly reminds me of https://screenshotsofdespair.tumblr.com , a blog I’ve followed and enjoyed for years now. It’s not quite the same in intent, but the vibes definitely match. Glad I’ve found this!

I’d like to just add that I love the looseness and randomness here. It all feels like fast and loose vibes, but theres still some theme I can’t put my finger on. Like the distilled essence of the abstract. I love it.

Hi. I’m probably a bad candidate for this, but I would love to be involved in some way. I’m in Korea, so it’s a completely different timezone. But still. Hit me up. Let me disappoint you.

I’d be down to moderate if you are looking, already moderate a couple other communities. I live in UTC+9:30.
