Blackland Prairie Raptor Center - Lucas, TX

This place has a very good website and Facebook feed compared to many other rescues. They’re open every first Saturday and also have many events and photography programs. If you’re in the area, they seem like a great place to check out.

Their Facebook has a Fix’em Friday feature on treatments they’re giving different animals. Here is this guy’s story.

We have been working hard to heal patient 23-0038’s right eye for weeks! This long-eared owl arrived with severe corneal ulcers leading to corneal scarring. Corneal ulcers are scratches on the surface of the eye and are very painful! These scratches were very deep and had started scarring by the time this patient arrived to BPRC.

Our rehab team managed to heal the ulcers and debrided the scar tissue resulting in further medical treatments to the eye. After some time, healing of the eye slowed down, so blood was drawn from a donor owl and spun in a centrifuge to separate serum from the rest of the blood. This serum, packed with proteins, has been used as eyedrops to help heal the long-eared owl’s eye!

This process is proving to be extremely successful! We are thrilled with how well this patient is healing!!

Oh, I forgot to mention we passed 1500 subs yesterday! Thank you all for helping grow this place! I forget how many people were here when I started posting, but my first posts were only getting around 20 votes and now they will usually get close to 100, so I’m glad you seem to be enjoying them!

If you’re new and want to see anything in particular or have any questions, let me know!

It really amazes me that so much of this is volunteer work and paid for entirely by donations. These people are truly invaluable.
