President Joe Biden said Friday he thought Hamas was motivated to attack Israel in part by a desire to stop that country from normalizing relations with Saudi Arabia.

“One of the reasons … why Hamas moved on Israel, is because they knew I was about to sit down with the Saudis,” Biden said at a campaign fundraiser. The U.S. president indicated that he thinks Hamas militants launched a deadly assault on Oct. 7 because, “Guess what? The Saudis wanted to recognize Israel” and were near being able to formally do so.

Jerusalem and Riyadh had been steadily inching closer to normalization, with Biden working to help bring the two countries together, announcing plans in September at the Group of 20 summit in India to partner on a shipping corridor.

Are you talking about the country where the majority of 9/11 terrorists came from? That saudi arabia? Or are you talking about their progressive attitude towards women’s rights? I bet you’re talking about saudi arabia’s support of free speech through example of their recognition of the works of Jamal Khashoggi

Are you saying that the the Nazis having an alliance with the USSR didn’t make both of them good guys? There’s no way they had leaders systematically murdering and imprisoning people, they made friendzies.

I think it’s a very cogent argument, about the timing. There’s a lot of incentives wrapped around the timetable that actually happened, and it behooves every politician to look at the timing, and seeing who benefits. That’s all that really matters on the global scale, who’s benefiting from actions, who’s encouraging those actions, and who’s going to benefit from your actions.

Of course. The timing of the Hamas attack seems very likely to be to disrupt the upcoming summit that had been scheduled between Israel and Saudi Arabia. And many were predicting that the Saudis would throw the Palestinians under the bus, in order to secure lucrative oil and weapons deals with the Israelis. Now that deal is off the table. Seems the Palestinians had the choice between genocide by doing nothing, or genocide in retaliation for the Hamas attack.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden said Friday he thought Hamas was motivated to attack Israel in part by a desire to stop that country from normalizing relations with Saudi Arabia.

Jerusalem and Riyadh had been steadily inching closer to normalization, with Biden working to help bring the two countries together, announcing plans in September at the Group of 20 summit in India to partner on a shipping corridor.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with Biden on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly in September and told him, “I think that under your leadership, Mr. President, we can forge a hi storic peace between Israel and Saudi Arabia.”

But talks were interrupted after Hamas militants stormed from the blockaded Gaza Strip where Palestinians live into nearby Israeli towns.

It led to retaliatory airstrikes by Israel that have left the world on edge with the U.S. trying to keep the war from widening, as 1,400 Israelis and 4,137 Palestinians have been killed.

Such a pact between Jerusalem and Riyadh would be a legacy-defining achievement for Biden, Netanyahu and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

I really hope trump is leading that list, otherwise you can fuck right off.

Biden is pretty cool imho but I, as the son of an Ukraine father, am also very biased because Biden is helping Ukraine to fuck up the Russian invaders so well. Don’t know shit how he is handling the rest, but in Germany we also have a pretty high opinion of him.
