Frankly, I like the idea of connecting this stuff up, even the silly ones like refrigerators and washing machines, for two reasons:

    1. monitoring - if my fridge is having temperature issues, I would like a warning
    2. notifications - my ADHD brain tends to forget to empty the dishwasher or laundry dryer and having a notification on my phone would help me remember.

Of course, my appliances are not smart enough to actually connect in the first place, and it’s not worth buying new ones simply for this functionality, but if it’s there then I can see some of the appeal. :)

Yeah, I get notifications on my phone every 5 minutes until I change the laundry, it’s been very helpful honestly.

What a time to be alive. I can see the fridge becoming sad and disobedient when the air conditioner goes “away” for 9 months until next summer, and then turns off all lights in retaliation.

As soon the A/C turns on for the season, the fridge and freezer conspire to automatically order burgers, buns and trimmings online. If you’re really lucky, they’ll also order you a new BBQ, if the old one doesn’t wake up and respond within 24 hours. Oh and you also need some new BBQ tongs and lifters, various sauces, onions and maybe pickles, assuming you have them in your “want list”. Amazon thanks you from the bottom of their CEO’s yacht.
