Given the nature of the fediverse it seems likely that at some point your average user may want to migrate between instances, - like say if your home instance suddenly gets defederated from others, or instigates rules that are too strict or too lax for your liking. Are there any plans in Lemmy’s future to make that possible? I know it’s trivial to make new accounts but I’m sure a lot of people, like me, enjoy having their online identity and post history all in one place.
If it’s anything like Mastodon, they’ll make it easy to export the stuff you follow and import it elsewhere. A true export and then import of all your history would be… very complicated and is probably not going to be a thing any time soon.
I agree this would be great. Are you thinking of just an export of your subscriptions, which would be pretty simple, or a bulk edit of all your past activity to attribute authorship to your new account, which seems more involved?
I’m not sure. Ideally I’d want to just click a button and move [email protected] to [email protected] with nothing else changing, but since usernames aren’t unique across the fediverse I guess that wouldn’t work. Maybe a way to link accounts so that if you click on [email protected] it also shows the post history for [email protected] and vice versa. Idk anything about coding or web development though, so I’m not sure what would be doable.
