Makes it easier to clean wet waste off of the seats without leaving a stain behind. Also requires less intense cleaner since stains aren’t such an issue. Overall a good thing!
Also less likely to harbour bugs.
Much more prone to damage though.
Part of the reason a maquette is preferred is that from high heels to the pointy corners on plastic art portfolios, sharp objects can’t get adequate purchase through the pile to do damage; it’s rare for maquette to be cut through use.
Comparatively, even very heavy duty vinyl will be prone to damage, especially in an upholstery situation. The tensions applied across the fabric, coupled with the thousands of arses a week on it (plus their shopping, suitcases, etc), will see this degrade much quicker.
Hard to tell from the picture, but I’d expect these to be injection molded and the vinyl to be bonded to the foam. You’re right though, vinyl shows wear worse than cloth.
Oh definitely, they wouldn’t have shaped the foam as it would give no support. Having had to actively distress maquette for a film set, it was hell! It’s durable to a ridiculous degree!
