The idea that only secretly queer people are homophobic is in itself homophobic and I’d like to see it stop being perpetuated in queer communities. Heterosexual people are responsible for heteronormativity, and therefore the vast majority of homophobia.

Are there some closeted, self-hating gays out there? Yes.

Does that mean every homophobe is a closeted, self-hating gay? No.

It’s not that every homophobe is secretly gay. It’s just funny how often the very loudest ones are.

But that’s not what this is saying. It’s saying that homophobic (or outwardly homophobic) politicians are closeted self-hating gays. And although I agree it’s a stereotype and obviously not true for all homophobes, I don’t see how pointing out the hypocrisy of this category of politicians it’s homophobic. Many people including myself don’t care if you’re a guy who enjoys tasting some primo quality cock, but if you’re doing so while promoting or pushing anti-gay laws then yeah I’m going to laugh at you for being a hypocritical shitbag.

I’m not even sure it’s fair to call it a stereotype. There is a verifiable trend of homophobes in power that are gay or bi. Particularly in politics and religion. For garden variety homophobes, sure. It’s a stereotype. But the ones that are actually influencing others and pushing policy, there’s far too many of them that have been caught with their pants down to simply dismiss the trend as one. Is it harmful and unproductive? Yeah. Is it incorrect? More likely than not, no

This seems like a testable hypothesis.

I don’t disagree, but politicians are responsible for representing us, and they help introduce and enforce laws. I feel significantly less empathetic for these folks when they enact legislature that takes our human rights away.

Something about screaming to others that they are doing wrong to keep them away from suspection that you are (also) the one doing something “wrong”?

What we hate the most always resonates deeply with ourselves for one reason or another. In this case it is often, but not quite always, repression.

      Not a word. Go again?

Of course it is. It’s a 2004 song by Britney Spears, which is often jammed hard by secretly gay politicians.

Dictionaries aren’t prescriptive, words aren’t bound by rules.

They kind of are, or else we wouldn’t be able to understand each other. You know what I mean when I write a sentence, because words have agreed upon definitions. If you define a word differently than everybody else, nobody knows wtf you’re actually saying.
