This is a combination of two different cells not one material

Currently most perovskites are based on Lead salts. So theyre cheap to manufacture but have obvious environmental issues
As long as they don’t leak lead, I don’t really see the problem.
the lead will be perfectly safe until someone crushes them up into a bunch of powder with a front loader, and then dumps in the nearest unsealed landfill
also lead mining/production is not waste free in of itself
Theyre lead salts. I guarantee that some of it is going to leech into the environment. And at some point theyre going to need to be manufactured in the first place and recycled/disposed of
The companies that make these need to provide free recycling for every panel they sell.
If they have better specific power, I image they’d still be very useful for spacecraft.

Oh great! I can’t wait to not see it or hear about it again just like all those other amazing breakthroughs 😭
This is the best summary I could come up with:
Researchers have made a breakthrough with a so-called miracle material to break the efficiency record for solar panel electricity generation.
A team from the Chinese solar technology firm Longi set a new world record of 33.9 per cent for a silicon-perovskite tandem solar cell, breaking the previous record set in May this year by King Abdullah University of Science & Technology (KAUST) in Saudi Arabia.
The new efficiency record also broke the theoretical limit of 33.7 per cent for the first time of standard single junction cells, which are found in commercial solar panels.
The theoretical efficiency limit of silicon-perovskite tandem solar cells is 43 per cent, however this level is unlikely to ever be realised on a commercial scale.
We’ve got a way to transform the efficiency of these solar cells with perovskite,” Chris Case, Oxford PV’s chief technology officer, told The Independent in August.
Perovskite has been hailed as a “miracle material” for its potential to revolutionise everything from high-speed telecommunications to renewable energy technologies.
