I need nose/sinus surgery because I couldn’t breath. Doctors said the scan showed so many things wrong, he said it would help my quality of life even with the possibility of 50% of the problems reverting. During surgery he found I had also fractured my nose at some point. I called insurance and the hospital also ensured me every procedure was covered. After surgery I found out everything was only covered about 50%. I could have flown to another country with comparable healthcare, paid out of pocket for surgery, stayed for a week of recovery, flown back, all for about the same cost.

    WTF

Insurance companies are a cancer. Unfortunately there’s no definitive way for either an insurance customer or the hospital/clinic to ensure 100% ahead of time that something will be covered. Even insurance companies own pre authorizations, which you’d think would be a guarantee of coverage before you have something done or get a medication, specifically state there’s no guarantee of coverage with this.

      It’s definitely WTF.

My wife just had surgery (literally, sitting with her in the recovery room now) and just getting here cost $800. When we got here they told us it’d be another two grand. No idea how we’re gonna pay that.

Talk with the financial aid office. Usually those people are pretty good about getting it reduced, especially if you don’t have insurance, and they should be able to create a payment plan.

Also check state law. Sometimes there’s legal protection for you.

Medical costs are absolutely insane, and insurance companies are typically going to deny coverage, leaving you have to pay out of pocket. It’s ridiculous.
