I don’t know, Google Photos not only recognizes cats, it can tell the difference between each of my cats.
Certainly image recognition has advanced by leaps and bounds, but I think the point of this story is that most people, those not in the IT or science fields, do not have a basis for comparing the advancements of AI and the entire process involved in machine learning. Therefore, significant progress for scientists can be perceived as minor progress to the general public.
That’s not what I got out of that. This looked like they were just making fun of people who think AI has advanced because it can sometimes guess the right thing.
