This is potentially terrible news. I love Eurogamer and RPS, if they get sold to a more greedy network like Fandom the quality of content there will go downhill fast.

I have (and still do) use EG for most of my news, but that has taken a slide in quality over the years. In general, they’re not receptive to developmental feedback either - though I’m not prepared to leave the blame at the editorial or mod staff door on that one when you’ve got a company like ReedPop coming in with a clear agenda to make more money, and leaving so soon.

My main concern is for DigitalFoundry - genuinely one of the best, most entertaining, and in-depth spin off channels out there.

DF Direct is my podcast of choice when driving to/from work. Their video content and analysis is always my number one watch.

I’d be gutted if they ruined DF.

Isn’t DF independent, and they just publish articles on Eurogamer? In that case I wouldn’t worry too much about them, right now.

I wish we lived in a universe, where these platforms can exist on their own, without falling into the trap of needing financial support from literal satan, in companies like Fandom

that universe requires people to pay money for content rather than having advertiser funded content that people will just block anyway. which in 2023 isn’t going to happen

If these were all getting financial support from a large company, why did they all switch on more ads, newsletters, anti-adblockers, and subscription prompts at basically the same time? Must’ve been only crumbs, I think they will move on and be better off. A few less click-bait titles in the aggregators are all that is lost I suppose.

The games “news” coverage system is a-changin’ again, the more things change, the more they stay the same.

Large companies are driven by one thing and only one thing. Shareholder value. So they and their subsidiaries will implement policies that drive shareholder value at the cost of everything else.

We should buy it. Crowd source it and let’s see what happens

Well. This isn’t going to end well. I mean there’s a tiny chance they’ll be bought by someone who knows well enough to be hands off, but more likely they’ll be run into the ground and then have their staff slashed as a cost-cutting measure. Hopefully things turn out all right for the people working at these sites.
