Hi all!

There are now almost 20,000 Lemmings on [email protected]. This makes us all the largest gaming community on Lemmy, yay! The last few weeks have seen a huge number of good discussions and interesting posts shared. Reports are minimal and the atmosphere in the community is good. We are proud of this and want to thank you all immensely for it!

As the community grows, we feel the need to explain the rules more clearly and add some new rules. We don’t want to add too many rules, but we hope this will be sufficient to keep the place running smoothly. Notes are in italics.

1. Submissions have to be related to games - Video games, tabletop, or otherwise. Posts not related to games will be deleted.

This community is focused on games, of all kinds. Any news item or discussion should be related to gaming in some way.

2. No bigotry or harassment, be civil - No bigotry, hardline stance. Try not to get too heated when entering into a discussion or debate.

We are here to talk and discuss about one of our passions, not fight or be exposed to hate. Posts or responses that are hateful will be deleted to keep the atmosphere good. If repeatedly violated, not only will the comment be deleted but a ban will be handed out as well. We judge each case individually.

3. No excessive self-promotion - Try to keep it to 10% self-promotion / 90% other stuff in your post history.

This is to prevent people from posting for the sole purpose of promoting their own website or social media account.

4. Stay on-topic; no memes, funny videos, giveaways, reposts, or low-effort posts - This community is mostly for discussion and news. Remember to search for the thing you’re submitting before posting to see if it’s already been posted.

We want to keep the quality of posts high. Therefore, memes, funny videos, low-effort posts and reposts are not allowed. We prohibit giveaways because we cannot be sure that the person holding the giveaway will actually do what they promise.

5. Mark Spoilers and NSFW - Make sure to mark your stuff or it may be removed.

No one wants to be spoiled. Therefore, always mark spoilers. Similarly mark NSFW, in case anyone is browsing in a public space or at work.

6. No linking to piracy - Don’t share it here, there are other places to find it. Discussion of piracy is fine.

We don’t want us moderators or the admins of lemmy.world to get in trouble for linking to piracy. Therefore, any link to piracy will be removed. Discussion of it is of course allowed.

We hope to have clarified the rules and why we apply them. If you have any questions or feedback, please let us know below!

Sports are games. Not sure that’s the kind of traffic this community is envisioning, though.

Ah, see, that’s a good spot. Rule lawyers are a valuable asset to the fabric of our society.

I think your comment is tongue in cheek but I still had the immediate reaction of “oh snap, he must have been watching the same game I did”

So if you were making a joke you got me hook, line and sinker :)

It’s from an episode of IT Crowd where they sign up for a service that will give them sports conversation starters so they can be popular.

Great what you’ve all done with the place. This is definitely one of the livelier and engaging communities I’ve seen on Lemmy so far.

I really appreciate how you structured these rules. Simple enough to remember, sensible enough to keep the conversation clean. Moderator discretion can be frustrating, but it’s a lot better than finding out that your post got deleted because it didn’t fit some arcane law that was hidden away on a sixth-layer wiki page.

I really appreciate the direction these changes put c/games on. Looking forward to seeing this place grow and thrive.

    Giveaways should not be banned.

It could help to bring more people to your community.

It would be better to have a very simple couple of rules.

No posting the codes outright. Simple mechanic for giving the code out like guess the number, or first to comment. State the source (Steam, GOG, Epic)

Like literally all you need, and yes I’m salty because I was literally just trying to give away a game because I have a code for something that is already in my library.

Don’t ban things that are beneficial to others. “We prohibit giveaways because we cannot be sure that the person holding the giveaway will actually do what they promise.” is not a valid enough reason to ban giveaways. Someone is offering something up, if they don’t commit, then ban them, not the practice of generosity.

    Edit: added a comma

Giveaways could be tolerated if verified by a moderator first. There are a lot of scams involving game code giveaway, so to protect the community we opted for banning it until we find a reliable way to verify such codes beforehand.

        That makes more sense.

That is more defined of an answer. It would be great to see a reliable method of being able to share games with other users.

No piracy ? Old habits die hard. In a free world, the slaves will still follow their master’s rules because that’s all they ever knew. The rules meant to keep them under control as they use and abuse them is now a sense of morality…

Also, while i understand the no memes rule why not have a day every week where it’s allowed.

We are following the rules of the LW instance which indictate not to share piracy links.

As for memes - there are many other general meme communities, and if your meme is about a specific game you should consider posting it to that game’s community or making such a community - Lemmy overall needs all the help it can get in supporting niche communities.

As for the instance overall, I think it depends on where it is hosted and that country’s attitude toward piracy and enforcement of anti-piracy laws.

In any case, it’s definitely not a moral judgement, just a practical decision on our part at least.

      No piracy ?

Will lemmy or a lemmy instance get a DMCA request if someone links a copyright infringing content in comments or a post?

Am no lawyer but fmhy and dbzer0 are two instances that are all about piracy and i don’t see them scared of a DMCA.

The instances owners country, and I geuss They’re probably from a western country.

I think the biggest threat is is things outside their control since the sites could be seized or cloudflare refusing to work with them or something. But it’s possible to be completely fully anonymous like with Anna’s archive.

On a side note, South American, African, east European and parts of Asia couldn’t care less about copyright since the market prices are tailored toward north America, Europe , australia and part of asia.
