I’m using Liftoff but also checked out Connect and am trying to figure this out. (It took me multiple tries just to create an account so bear with me!). How can I find popular communities? I found a master list but it was in alphabetical order and wouldn’t let me sort by subscriber count.

Take a look at Lemmy explorer
If you login on your browser and look under Communities, they are list from most subbed to least. At least for me
Yep, click Communities at the top of your page and filter by All.
I do all of my searching for communities on https://lemmyverse.net/communities - browse.feddit.de is another often recommended site, but I find Lemmyverse nicer to browse.

Looks like something is breaking the link and redirecting to a completely different site. Maybe an app or a plugin?
Lemmy should generally be straight forward: you click on a link and end up on that site.
I am using the Connect for Lemmy app until Sync for Lemmy drops.
