Looking on the wiki, it feels like some skilling guides don’t take into account the opportunity cost of grinding other skills or grinding for gp. Sure, I can buy logs for fletching and get 100k xp/hr, but that doesn’t take into account the 100k gp/hr required to do that. It’s not really 100k xp/hr anymore. There’s also fletching broad arrows, which the wiki says “are not very useful for anything” and are also expensive. It feels silly to make a ton of resources that are just going to be thrown away, when instead arrows can be made to level ranged.

The most efficient skilling methods also seem circular. If I want to grind x I should level y, but I need z to be efficient. And to get z I need to grind x. There’s also what feels like a lack of skilling options listed. Sometimes I want to do “dead content” for the fun of it.

I’m definitely just a noob, but discovering new stuff to do is hard sometimes. I also am aware that I’m contradicting myself a bit by wanting a more efficient guide but also wanting dead content lol. But anyway, are there any resources available that might help me out?

You might be looking for something closer to what the Ironman Skilling Discord offers. They have great breakdowns of the best ways for Ironmen to train each skill, from super sweaty EHP methods to more relaxed but still efficient methods.

That sounds awesome, I don’t normally like discord but I’ll definitely get on there. I appreciate it :)

Of course! It’s definitely a great resource, I just keep the general channels muted haha.

Just made me think “congrats, you’ve found the core gameplay loop of RS”. I know its not obvious when you’re new to the game but thats the fun of it. I want to enjoy the forestry update to the fullest but to be at max efficiency I’d need to do Temple Trekking and Dagganoth Kings. I said fuck that and just went for it.

Efficiencyscape is a fallacy pushed by the players (who are a VERY vocal minority on reddit in particular, and I’m sure here if the community takes off) who really need to touch grass. Plus its not really always practical for Ironman. Hell, I’m doing battlestaves because I have excessive comics from GotR, hate glass blowing, and it makes me money (which I can do as filler activity while doing Agility) Yea, its less xp/hr than glass, but fuck that.

Honestly I feel that grinding less efficient “dead” (fuck that word too, leads straight to powercreep) content that you find fun will be better than boring content for the sake of effieciency.

I got my 99 wc with a rune axe. It’s really not that much slower and with as afkable as a skill as wc is, who really cares if it takes an extra hour or two. People need to learn to play the game how they want to and just have fun.

Yeah, people get too obsessed with efficiency. I stress enough at work; I don’t need that in my chill time as well.

my GIM says stuff like that all the time, “its not efficient so I feel bad doing it”

Buddy, having fun while doing something inefficient will ensure you do it much longer and prevent burnout over doing something you don’t enjoy that is efficient

Honestly a lot of the fun in ironman skilling is figuring out how you want to collect and use resources. Every account and progression plan is unique, but as a general rule the wiki is your friend. Check which iron friendly methods are available to you and plan from there.

For mining and smithing the ores I got from afking MLM fed nicely into Giants Foundry. I was poor and wanted fletching levels, so chopping yews and making bows for agility alchs worked out great. These were some of my paths, yours might differ completely.

Have you looked at the wiki page for ironman specific guides? The general guides are definitely focused towards mains. https://oldschool.runescape.wiki/w/Ironman_guide

I started an iron a few days ago after maxing my main and am still figuring some of the early game skilling stuff out myself, but that’s part of the fun of it is having to play the game in a very different way than I’m used to.

If I want to grind x I should level y, but I need z to be efficient.

This is just a big part of RuneScape whether your iron or not. Everything is so intertwined that no matter what you want to do theres always someone completely different that you can do first to make it better

It’s ironic that you go on to use fletching as your example because this is the first paragraph of the Ironman fletching guide lol.

[https://oldschool.runescape.wiki/w/Ironman\_Guide/Fletching](Fletching is most often trained through making broad arrows, as the ability to purchase all the ingredients to make them cuts out any frustrating preparation time (at the cost of coins to buy the ingredients). The stackability of all ingredients in making broad arrows makes it an easy skill to train in tandem with other skills, such as Runecraft, Agility, Farming, and more.)
