Everything about the new musical origin story starring Timothée Chalamet is derivative and cloying.

    First sentence:

Crafting an origin story for a character who doesn’t need one

This sums up pretty much every franchise origin story and prequel.

I loved the original movie and still watch it every few years. I saw the Tim Burton version in the theatre and it was decent, but I’ve never had any overwhelming urge to see it again. This one just makes me wonder why I should even give a shit. Was this something people were asking for? What good is an origin story for a character whose is supposed to be enigmatic and mysterious? Isn’t that the whole point of Willy Wonka?

I’m surprised they didn’t call it Wonka rising, or i Wonka. That’s usually what they name these low effort origins

Cloying? I come here for entertainment not education. Apparently it means “excessively sweet, rich, or sentimental, especially to a disgusting or sickening degree.” For the other people like me who thought it might be a type of bird song.

Shouldn’t a movie about candy be cloying?

No, good candy balances sugars with flavors or other ingredients to avoid being cloying.
