Hey hey!

I’m window shopping for a DAC for a simple computer/desktop system. Mac Mini —> DAC —> Adam A5x.

Right now I’m using a Focusrite Scarlett Solo that I’m looking to upgrade for (A) improved sound quality - something smooth - speakers plenty detailed and unforgiving and (B) remote volume!

Any thoughts / suggestions under $800 new or used.

Teac UD 503 is my top choice at the moment.

Ah, so you’re looking for high-end.

Unfortunately, I only really have impressions of Chi-fi, and for $800 I’d recommend the D90LE from Topping and the SMSL SU-10

Those are interesting choices, though my gut is that the Teac would be a better match for this system.

Also interested in the RME-ADI-2, but it’s more than I want to spend, but still considering it.

Did you consider an integrated like kef LS50W /W2? I have gone this way years ago and really enjoying it. Simple setup, paired with any of many open source streaming platforms. Outstanding audio quality and you end up saving a lot. With the W2 you can even automate things (turn on the speaker and set the right input whenever the steamer goes in playback mode, etc)

Those sound neat, but wouldn’t have been on my radar. My first serious speakers were KEFs - my parents have them now.

I have Oskar Hell Aulos for my main system. It’s the tweeters in these that led to the Adams.

Too much competition for my money these days or I would have probably already bought the Teac DAC. It’s interesting not many DACs have remote volume. It’s not a typical setup I get it.
