Mr Tusk’s coalition won the elections in October but had not been able to take office until now.

    Mr. Tusk’s coalition won in October with a record turnout of 70%.

    Tusk aims to restore the independence of the judiciary, unblock €36bn (£30bn) of EU funds earmarked for Poland, reverse a 2020 court decision which banned abortion in almost all cases, and strengthen protections for LGBTQ people.

    However, the President is still Mr. Duda, who has the ability to veto any laws or bills that come his way and Tusk’s Parliament does not have the votes to override a presidential veto.

    So, my takeaway is that there will likely be some gridlock but I suppose that is better than the alternative.

      @kennethb
      We can hope! Looks like he definitely has some hurdles, but hopefully this is just the start of return to sanity.

      Too many far-right politicians have weaseled their way into power and it’s concerning.

    Why do they get the good Donald?

    Seriously though this seems like one of the few bright spots in the politics as of late. I really think that Poland could become the next major player in the EU in the keep this up.

      Not really the “good” Donald either. It literally ping pongs between him and a right wing government every few years. He already had his chance and blew it, so don’t expect something good to come out of it this time.

          I mean I’d certainly say so. Not that the bad Donald sets a very high bar lol.

          He’s pro EU, wants the judiciary to be more independent, wants to restore abortion rights, and protect the rights of LGBTQ people. In my opinion, that’s pretty based.

    @CoffeeAddict Good. Now I hope he looks out his office window, sees that there’s an ongoing genocidal invasion going on to his southeast, and acts accordingly.
